British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French aircraft in a combined operation on an underground arms cache in Syria used by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The location, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was situated in mountainous terrain just above the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a several access tunnels providing entry to the facility... early reports are that the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the operation on Saturday evening and every plane involved made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - also known as the so-called Islamic State - imposed militant control over parts of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation demonstrates our UK leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eradicate any revival of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

British military aircraft have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of IS after its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank all the members of the UK armed forces participating in this mission for their expertise and their courage," Healey commented. "They were among a great many British personnel stationed over the holidays. This mission, to remove militants who pose a risk to our way of life, demonstrates how UK forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, protecting the UK within its borders and strong abroad."

In December, the US military executed what it described as a "massive strike" against Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an assault resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The U.N. estimates IS still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Iraq and Syria.
