Ex British Serviceman Charged of Killing Kenyan Female Appears in Court

An individual has been presented in court as extradition proceedings commenced in the investigation of Agnes Wanjiru, a Kenyan national, a female from Kenya who was found dead near a UK military installation in 2012.

Robert Purkiss, 38, who is a native of the Manchester area, was presented at the Westminster court on Friday, and told the court he intended to contest the extradition. Reports indicate that he was arrested on Thursday evening.

An arrest warrant for the suspect was issued by a court in Nairobi in September. Legal prosecutors told the Kenyan court that the accused had been charged with a single count, of homicide, and that the Kenyan authorities would seek his extradition to stand trial.

The defendant was once employed as a medical attendant with the regiment of the Duke of Lancaster, the infantry regiment for the north-west of England, including on tours of Afghanistan.

Wanjiru, 21 years old, a beautician who had a young daughter, went missing after a evening out, and her remains was found two months later in the area of the hotel where she had previously spotted.

No one had earlier been taken into custody or accused in connection to her demise. His detention followed a recent detective probe, which followed a article in 2021 by a Sunday newspaper, in which the media outlet contacted several current and former soldiers in the regiment.

The probe has been headed by Kenyan detectives, which, under a mutual defense pact, maintains prosecutorial power in the case.
