The state attorney general has introduced a new digital platform encouraging residents to share photos and videos of ICE operations around New York. This move comes just a shortly after a significant enforcement action shook Chinatown in Manhattan, prompting mass demonstrations.
A US congressman disclosed during a news conference that four US citizens were taken into custody and kept for "nearly 24 hours" following the enforcement action. Rallies erupted in NYC on consecutive evenings.
"All New York residents has the right to live without fear," the attorney general wrote in a statement.
"For those who saw and documented ICE activity during the raid, I encourage you to share that footage with my office. We are committed to assessing these submissions and evaluating any violations of law."
The portal provides spaces to submit images and video footage of the raid, as well as a section to specify where it occurred. When submitting, individuals must mark a box that confirms that "authorities could utilize any documents, photographs, or videos in a public document, including in a court case or public report."
The enforcement action, which witnesses say involved over fifty ICE personnel, happened in a popular district of NYC where fake products and merchandise are sold daily in large quantities – typically to visitors.
Videos of the incident show multiple masked and armed personnel securing and holding a man, and shoving away witnesses. Throngs of New Yorkers pursued the personnel along the roads. An military-style transport was observed moving along the city streets.
During a Wednesday press conference held with the immigrant advocacy group, congressman Dan Goldman, a Democrat, stated that four US citizens were taken by federal agents for almost a full day and that there were "no circumstances where four American citizens should be arrested for without cause." He noted the individuals were let go on the following day with no charges filed.
"The intent is obvious here. It is not to take criminals off the street," Goldman stated. "This constitutes a militarized effort to provoke unrest. It is purely a pretext to provoke conflict for the government to utilize the armed forces to stop conflict that they initiated."
Outrage over the federal action escalated – each of the political contenders condemned the incident, as did NY's governor.
"Yet again, the federal government selects heavy-handed tactics that generate terror, instead of protection. It must stop," a political candidate declared.
NYC community groups expressed outrage too.
"Federal officers targeted the neighborhood with military-style vehicles, hooded officers and protective equipment to focus on street vendors attempting to earn income. This operation had nothing to do with public safety and everything to do with terrorizing immigrant families and communities," stated the head of a advocacy group.
Agency rules bans the arrest of American nationals and the agency has claimed it refrains from take into custody American nationals. Yet, external research has found that numerous citizens have been detained unlawfully by immigration authorities during the period of the present government.
Immigration operations have been becoming more common in New York and across the US this year.
An October operation in central NYC was the initial documented operation on an immigrant shelter of the present government. Protests targeting ICE are widespread along with claims of aggression and inhumane treatment.
Most recently, a submission provided by legal entities claimed healthcare failures of women with child in government custody.
