New research reveals that patients who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt traditional diet and exercise programs.
Published data in a leading medical journal shows that while overweight people often shed a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"People using these treatments need to be informed of the risk of quick weight regain when the treatment concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery means a reversion to starting mass in about a year and a half.
Analyzing Treatments
The analysis, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Scientists point out that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise generally have a less rapid creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Understanding the Quick Regain
Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated regain.
These medications copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Stopping of this medication results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Issue?
The NHS suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts contend that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "underscore the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Experiences
Users who have come off the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"It was like something that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," described an individual.
This challenge is worsened if patients have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Growing Adoption
Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is higher among women than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success relies on integrated behavioural changes.
