The star has handed over the complete sum of his £25,000 Mercury Prize cash to the MVT, which operates to protect the Britain's independent concert spaces.

Fender was given the prize on mid-October as his new release the album was chosen as the top album of the last 12 months.

The musician has opted to hand the money over to the Music Venues Trust, in acknowledgment of the vital role local spots fulfilled in his early career.

"I couldn't be pursuing my current career if it weren't for all the shows I performed around the area, and elsewhere, when I was starting out," stated Fender. "These venues are legendary, but they are facing challenges."

From early 2023 onward, over 150 of these spaces have permanently closed – approximately 16 percent of the whole industry in the UK.

In the last year, major artists such as the band Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all supported the trust in its efforts to support the industry, by applying a small levy to their ticket costs, which benefits smaller concert halls.

Fender also participated, raising more than £100,000 on his recent tour to assist 38 grassroots venues across the UK.

The money supported locations that were dealing with imminent closure due to issues stemming from floods, fires and family tragedies, as well as regulatory hurdles, legal disputes and neighbor objections.

Additional spaces received funding support in upgrading amenities and gear that directly benefitted performers and audiences.

"The notion that funds from shows in major spaces helps the local stages, where it begins for musicians like me, is just logical," Fender has said.

The musician is far from the only musician to donate his award funds to good deeds.

When Pulp won the prize in the year 1996 for their record their work, lead singer the singer stated that the band would donate their winnings to the non-profit the charity.

In 2002, musician she divided her bounty between several organizations, such as the NSPCC and a charity for Sickle Cell.

"I also donated a thousand pounds to Highgate Newtown, to their classes, because I trained in gymnastics when I was growing up and they required new equipment," she explained to outlets.

In recent years, Ezra Collective contributed their funds to the youth organization that supported their act, in addition to other local music groups.

And winners that year they donated their award to a MS organization after a acquaintance was found to have the condition.

"The victory was sufficient," said singer Small. "The money was the cherry on top but we could do without the bonus, because we had the main prize. So our success touched somebody else's life."

Last week, the Music Venues Trust announced it had saved several grassroots venues in the South East, by bringing them into local control.

One venue in Southampton and the other in the city were acquired under the public acquisition program, which is funded by the arts council and enthusiasts who acquire "stakes" in the properties.
