Fashion legend Antony Price, the groundbreaking British fashion designer behind some of the most iconic looks favored by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has died aged 80.

He was celebrated for his sculptured silhouettes and performative fashion, such as the light-hued ensembles that became famous from the iconic band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "Rio".

"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement online."

This news arrives less than a month after he debuted his newest line in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Singer Lily Allen walked in a dress that paid homage to the notorious black velvet "revenge dress" historically worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.

An Enduring Influence

Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price headed for London at the start of the 1960s to enroll at the prestigious Royal College of Art.

Upon completing his studies, he began designing men's fashion at the company Stirling Copper and was the creator of the tight, button-detailed trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger wore during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He established his eponymous line in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show featured as its opener looks from model Jerry Hall, who later wore the bridal gown Price specifically designed for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.

Collaborations with Icons

A long-time collaborator of David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the distinctive jacket the singer wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His trademark skill to merge elements of men's and women's fashion along with his technical proficiency in shaping body-hugging looks cemented his status as a "one-of-a-kind talent," according to the British Fashion Council.

In the 1990s, he started creating ensembles for Camilla, now Queen Consort, which included a number of outfits for her tour of the United States after becoming Duchess.

After a career spanning more than five decades, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London last month in partnership with the fashion brand 16Arlington.

  • Defined Shapes: Central to his design philosophy.
  • Dramatic Impact: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
  • Boundary-Pushing Tailoring: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
  • Clients from Stage to Palace: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.

The fashion world mourns the loss to a genuine innovator whose impact on the visual landscape of music remains deeply ingrained.
