The fast bowler Poised for a Major Role in the Ashes

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chief selector Bailey has confirmed that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

There were concerns that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on November 21 in Western Australia.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about the prospects of participating.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and various factors involved, not just the physical problem, but additional elements," he commented.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he will feature a major part. Ideally it's the first Test. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Past Concerns

The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand last month after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of spinal problems, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the contest.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Backup Options

Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from the national team for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and mentioned that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the opening match as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs in any case. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
