The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

As any major awards ceremony nears, one notices an outcry for the addition of new categories to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and fill the hearts of fans with niche passions.

Another commentator previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. The same goes for board games, which is someone's personal cause. However, I must insist when I prioritize since similar to blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification backing this proposal remains most pressing and significant. This is the request: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and typically start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that movie academies steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains a necessary evil in the world of video games, showing incredible range they hardly constitute as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these classifications effectively encompass many game types, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges of one title, intense tile-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. What category would fit them within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers launched regularly that have no home in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked for anything during that awards season
  • A different innovative game was excluded during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked in 2021
  • Just some puzzle games scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're small games, yet the craft behind logic titles is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most popular titles worldwide maintaining this status for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience competes with well-known building titles claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. You could fill a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these are games that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers are working at the demanding boundary of video game design, creating some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Just like cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
