Although not quite at the same level as sparing holiday birds, but the Miami-Dade County mayor had her own Donald Trump moment this week by ceremoniously saving the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava performed the seasonal stunt at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. Clemency is justified for her. Her criminal record is spotless,” stated the mayor in a speech with obvious nods to the sheer volume of executive clemencies issued from the start of the beginning of a second term in office.
“Except perhaps for eating half a dozen apples per day,” the mayor added. “May this pig enjoy a prosperous future without fear.”
The gathering, either celebrating or rejecting the local cultural practice of consuming swine during the holidays, was created to mirror the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The swine, provided by a Coral Gables firefighter, was christened after the modern linguistic fad of young people yelling “six seven” – deriving from a musical verse – often seemingly at random. The craze became so ubiquitous that a major dictionary recently named “6-7” its annual vocabulary selection.
This particular pig is now set to enjoy its days at a farm sanctuary “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the event’s official press release.
“The annual pig pardon has become a beloved tradition to begin the end-of-year celebrations,” said the cafe owner, in a decidedly positive message.
“It captures the spirit of Miami: vibrant, varied, and rooted in traditions that foster togetherness. Annually, we are honored to observe tradition and kindness in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Attendees enjoyed a vegetarian menu of spinach croquetas and strong coffee as they celebrated Six Seven’s big moment.
