The Reason Real Madrid Have 'Complete Faith' in Teenager Pitarch

Thiago Pitarch in action
Thiago Pitarch has played seven games for Real Madrid, including five starts.

Whenever a 18-year-old creates Real Madrid history in a pivotal European tie against Manchester City, it inevitably draws praise and attention.

In only his first start in the competition - and fifth game for the team - Thiago Pitarch suitably impressed as the 15-time Champions League winners claimed a 3-0 last-16 first leg lead at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The teenager, who also had his club debut in the qualifying round a few weeks prior with a substitute appearance at Sporting Lisbon, then assisted the Madrid side overcome the English champions in Tuesday's second leg to secure a quarter-final berth.

At 18 years and 226 days, the midfielder became the club's most youthful starter to start twice in the Champions League's latter rounds, beating Brazil forward Vinicius Jr's record by 10 days.

A Meteoric Rise Through The Academy

This talent is the latest to emerge from the famed youth system and is quickly establishing himself as one of the manager's most exciting protegees.

He signed for Madrid from Leganes in 2023, having previously been with Atletico and Getafe academies, and starting out for the under-19 side, where he quickly made a strong impression.

He progressed to the B team and it was during a pre-season game in which they played against the academy's first team, then managed by the former defender, where the youngster is said to have drawn the eye of the present manager, who took over from the previous coach in January.

Spanish media would later describe the moment as "love at first sight," adding Pitarch stood out not only for his skill on the ball, but for the energy, character and drive he brought to the team.

'His Best Attribute Is His Character'

During the pre-season of 2025, former boss Xabi Alonso invited Pitarch to practice with the first team and awarded him minutes during the warm-up matches.

However, it was Arbeloa's appointment that became the defining moment in his career as he was introduced as a late substitute in each leg against the Portuguese side that set up the clash with Pep Guardiola's team.

"I've dreamed of this each night when sleeping, the first day I started playing the game, every day you head to training and each day you have a game," said the player following his first appearance.

"I've just fulfilled my dream with the best team in the planet and in the best competition."

Given a first start in La Liga against Getafe - where he spent four years after moving from Atletico in 2018 - he has retained his spot for the following four as fitness issues to Jude Bellingham and Ceballos created an opportunity.

The teenager has taken it with displays that have belied his age and experience.

"He is a extremely fast player, and you can observe what he's capable of," remarked Arbeloa. "He is extremely energetic, with excellent stamina, work-rate and mobility."

The player's mindset has also stood out to his manager.

"His greatest quality is his character," continued he. "He constantly demands the ball, and even under pressure, he remains unfazed.

"I realize people are surprised to watch him make his debut in a European fixture, but he's playing because I had total trust in him to perform what he usually does.

"He will continue to get chances with the first team. It's a pleasure to have a player like him."

Spain or Morocco?

Pitarch was born in Fuenlabrada, in the Madrid region, and was raised fully immersed in the local game, progressing through local academies before entering the club's famous youth academy.

He possesses both Moroccan and Spanish nationality, giving him the choice to play for both nations at senior international level.

According to Fifa eligibility rules, players may appear for multiple nations at junior level without being locked in, with the final decision only binding once they appear in a competitive senior international match.

Pitarch has featured for Spain at underage levels, turning out for both the under-19 and under-20 teams, and participated in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where Spain reached the last eight.

Despite this, he has not yet decided to any senior national team, who are monitoring his rise with keen attention.

In a recent interview, Pitarch said: "I haven't made my ultimate choice so far. Things are great with the Spanish federation, but I'll make a conclusion in the near future."

This scenario echoes that of other dual nationality talents such as club colleague Brahim Diaz and Barca star Yamal. While 18-year-old Yamal opted for La Roja, Brahim decided to play for the Atlas Lions.

Focus on the Future

At present, his attention is on establishing himself in the Real side and repaying his manager's belief.

He played over an hour in the 2-1 victory at the Etihad, which sealed a five-one overall triumph and a quarter-final matchup with Bayern Munich.

He was replaced by fellow youth graduate in Manuel Angel to emphasise the coach's confidence in younger players to aid the team pursue future success.

Following his impressive impact to date on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is expected to be a central figure in that.

"Arbeloa handles me the same. We handle it very normally. I try not to overanalyze it excessively - I must earn my minutes on the field," he commented following the success at Etihad Stadium.
