Zelenskyy States Putin Sought Dialogue After Cruise Missile Proposals

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy declared during his visit to Washington that Vladimir Putin's move to seek negotiations with the US president indicates Moscow is on the defensive. Zelenskyy commented, "It's evident that Russia is scrambling to resume conversations immediately after it learns of cruise missiles." This statement referred to earlier comments about providing long-range weapons to Ukraine.

Political Developments and Global Responses

A former American diplomat, Dan Fried, observed, "Putin is attempting to derail the momentum toward increased pressure on the Kremlin." He added, "The outcome will become clear on Friday, but the chances of achieving a truce by pressuring Russia to get serious appear to have diminished."

This situation came after the US president had in recent days been hardening his language toward Russia until Thursday's conversation with Putin, which the Kremlin described as "extremely frank and trustful."

European Energy Restrictions and Economic Impact

EU authorities have established a mandate for energy importers into the EU to prove their fuels are not sourced from Russian crude, as stated in a official guideline published on recently. This measure is included in the European Union's forthcoming ban on imports of refined products processed from Russian crude, which forms part of its 18th restrictive measures against Moscow over its military actions in the region.

Financial experts observed that investment activity appeared to be factoring in the possible end of India's purchases of Russian oil. Several Indian refiners are preparing to reduce Russian oil imports, with projections of a phased reduction, as reported by insiders knowledgeable about the situation.

"This represents a positive development for the crude oil price as it would remove a major buyer of Russian crude," commented a market analyst, noting that crude values were stable on the trading day.

Military Developments and Infrastructure Strikes

A massive Russian unmanned aircraft and rocket assault hit gas facilities in eastern Ukraine on Thursday, resulting in disruptions in multiple regions. Authorities in Ukraine stated that Russia launched numerous of drones and dozens of missiles, along with glide bombs.

"During this fall, the Russian forces use daily opportunities to strike at our power facilities," declared Ukraine's president, noting that strikes impacted the regions of northern Ukraine, Kharkiv, central Ukraine, northeastern Ukraine and Vinnytsia.

Global Diplomatic Reactions

Kyiv's envoy to Washington, the Ukrainian ambassador, asserted that Russia showed its true approach to peace through the "violence" of these attacks. "Russia yet again chose weapons over talks, making this assault into a direct setback to current peace efforts," Stefanishyna commented.

Meanwhile, the EU's top diplomat, the bloc's representative, stated that the EU had little option but to build up anti-drone defences against Russia. Kallas announced a "plan" to prepare for possible conflict by 2030, including a novel defensive network to be completely functional by the end of 2027.

This initiative, called the "EU defensive program," is expected to start operations in its first phase by the end of 2026 and be completely operational by the end of 2027. EU authorities aims to secure the backing of EU leaders at a meeting in the coming days.
